The Zimbabwe Revenue Authority has suspended the implementation of statutory instrument number 64 of 2016 which sought to tighten screws on imports of basic commodities following protests by travelers at Beitbridge Border post on Saturday.
Zimra had started rolling out the new regulations which made the import of food items, building materials , furniture, toiletries and cooking oil among other things, virtually impossible without prior notice to travelers.
There was chaos at Beitbridge border post on Saturday afternoon with travelers resisting the seizure of the imported of goods which now require people to have permits.

Riot police had to be called in but the angry travelers would not budge in to the fully geared police, and insisted that riot or no riot they were not going to pay duty on basic commodities, and they were not allowing ZIMRA to confiscate they goods.
The revenue collecting state machinery was left with no option, but to suspend implementation to the controversial statutory instrument indefinitely.
